Where to start
American Airlines directs post-travel concerns to Customer Relations. For a cancellation, its disruption guidance explains rebooking, while baggage problems should be reported promptly through the baggage process. U.S. rules can require a refund when the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and you decline the alternative; general cash compensation is not federally required for an ordinary delay.
Claim directly with American Airlines
Official American Airlines form for post-travel complaints and requests. Baggage reports and ticket refunds use their own processes.

If American cancels a flight or a delay causes a missed connection, first establish the replacement itinerary. If you decide not to take an airline-cancelled or significantly changed U.S. itinerary, the unused-ticket refund question is separate from a request for meals, hotel costs or other losses. State the requested remedy clearly instead of asking for generic compensation.
Build a complete Customer Relations submission
Keep a copy of the form confirmation and attachments. Route-specific rules can matter on international journeys, so include the complete itinerary rather than only the delayed segment.
- Record locator and ticket number
- Operating flight, date and complete itinerary
- Original and replacement arrival times
- The disruption reason American provided
- Itemised receipts and proof of payment
- Every airport, baggage and customer-relations reference
Baggage has its own report and deadlines
Report delayed or damaged baggage promptly and keep the 13-character file reference American provides. The airline asks passengers claiming reasonable interim expenses to preserve itemised receipts. International baggage claims can also be subject to short written-notice periods under the Montreal Convention, so do not wait for a flight-disruption response before filing.
Escalation and route limitations
If American does not resolve a U.S. consumer-protection concern, a complaint may be filed with the Department of Transportation after contacting the airline. A departure from the EU or UK can engage that jurisdiction’s departure rules even though American is a U.S. carrier. The operating carrier, route, cause and timing still determine the result.
