Delta Air Lines delay, cancellation and baggage claims

Delta uses different channels for comments, out-of-pocket reimbursement and baggage. Choose the channel by remedy and retain each case number.

Where to start

Delta directs general post-travel complaints to its Comment and Complaint form, eligible out-of-pocket expense requests to its reimbursement form, and baggage issues to a separate baggage claim. Under U.S. rules, a refund may be owed after an airline cancellation or significant change when the passenger does not accept the alternative, but ordinary delays do not create a general federal cash-compensation right.

Choose the form that matches the request

Describe each remedy separately even when one disruption caused several losses. This makes it easier to match receipts and evidence to the request being decided.

  • Comment and Complaint: service concerns and compensation requests
  • Reimbursement: eligible meals, hotel or ground transport paid during a disruption
  • Baggage claim: delayed, lost, damaged or missing baggage
  • Refund request: unused transportation or services that were not provided

Preserve the disruption timeline

The complete itinerary matters when connections are on one booking or when another jurisdiction may apply. Save the confirmation generated by every Delta form.

  • Confirmation and ticket numbers
  • Original and replacement itineraries
  • Operating flight and final arrival time
  • Delta’s stated reason for the disruption
  • Boarding passes, notices and screenshots
  • Itemised receipts with proof of payment

Refunds are different from reimbursement

A ticket refund returns the price of unused transportation when the governing rule requires it. Reimbursement covers a specific out-of-pocket cost. Compensation, where available under a route-based regime, addresses the disruption itself. Asking for one does not automatically request the others.

Baggage and escalation

Report baggage trouble promptly and retain the file reference before submitting the later baggage claim. If an unresolved issue concerns U.S. aviation consumer protections, a DOT complaint is available after contacting Delta. Flights departing the EU or UK, or involving Canada, can require a separate route-based analysis.
