Where to start
Qantas directs complaints and claims to its Customer Care form, with dedicated reimbursement paths for disruption expenses and delayed baggage. For Australian travel, the result depends on Qantas policy and the Australian Consumer Law, including whether a service was supplied within a reasonable time. Fixed compensation under EU, UK or Canadian rules may apply only when the itinerary falls within those systems.

When Qantas cancels a flight, it says it will rebook the passenger on the next available Qantas flight where possible at no additional cost, with a refund option if the passenger no longer wishes to travel. Depending on the circumstances, assistance may include meals, transport or accommodation. The compensation and refunds policy distinguishes events within Qantas control from events outside it.
Australian consumer guarantees still matter
Airline policies do not replace Australian consumer guarantees. The ACCC explains that a passenger may be entitled to a replacement service or refund when a travel service is not provided within a reasonable time, depending on factors such as the length and cause of the disruption and the alternative offered. This is not an automatic fixed payment for every delay.
Choose the correct Qantas claim category
Keep each request and its documents clearly separated. A single disruption can involve more than one category, but each has different evidence and conditions.
- Use Customer Care for a complaint or general compensation request.
- Use the disruption reimbursement path for reasonable meals, transport or accommodation.
- Report baggage first, then use the baggage-expense claim with the 10-character reference.
- Use the refund route when the remedy requested is the unused ticket price, not disruption expenses.
Evidence to keep
Explain why the replacement offered was or was not reasonable for the journey. Avoid describing every disruption as fixed compensation: identify whether you are seeking a refund, reimbursement, replacement service or another remedy.
- Booking reference and ticket receipt
- Original and replacement itineraries
- Qantas cancellation or delay messages
- Actual arrival time
- Itemised expense receipts
- Baggage file reference and photographs
Route-specific rights and limitations
A Qantas flight departing the EU or UK can be assessed under the departure rules there even though Qantas is an Australian carrier. Canadian rules can matter for travel to, from or within Canada. Codeshares should be checked against the operating airline, and Jetstar has separate policies and claim channels.
