Can you claim Air Canada flight delay compensation?

Under Canada’s APPR, fixed compensation can apply when an Air Canada disruption was fully within the airline’s control, was not required for safety, the passenger received 14 days’ notice or less, and final arrival was at least three hours late. The written claim must be sent to the operating airline within one year. EU, UK or U.S. rules may instead or additionally matter on some international routes, so start with the complete itinerary.

The route determines which rules to check

Flights to, from or within Canada can fall under the Canadian APPR. A flight departing the EU or UK can engage the departure rules there even when Air Canada operates it. U.S. rules may matter for a cancellation or significant change involving U.S. travel. These systems distinguish compensation, care, alternative travel and refunds, so do not assume one answer covers every remedy.

Prepare the details Air Canada asks for

Air Canada says its eligibility assessment can take up to 72 hours after arrival while the disruption cause is finalised. Its tool asks for the booking reference, passenger name and flight date. Keep the complete itinerary because compensation can depend on arrival at the final destination rather than the first delayed segment.

  • Booking confirmation and ticket number
  • Flight number, date and complete itinerary
  • Passenger names exactly as booked
  • Arrival time and every disruption message
  • Itemised receipts for reasonable expenses

Use a separate record for baggage

Report a delayed or damaged bag promptly and retain the baggage file or Property Irregularity Report reference. Air Canada directs post-travel baggage concerns through Customer Care. A baggage report at the airport and a later written reimbursement claim can be separate steps, so preserve both confirmation records.

If the answer is missing or unsatisfactory

For a Canadian APPR complaint, contact the airline in writing first. The Canadian Transportation Agency says to give the airline 30 days to reply before filing an eligible complaint with the CTA. A request for delay or cancellation compensation must be sent to the airline within one year of the disruption. Other governing regimes have their own escalation routes and deadlines.

Important limitations

A long delay does not automatically produce cash compensation. Cause, notice, arrival delay and governing route all matter. Compensation already paid under another passenger-rights regime may affect a Canadian claim for the same event. Codeshare flights should be checked against the operating carrier shown on the itinerary.

Common questions

How much Air Canada delay compensation could apply?

For a qualifying APPR claim against a large airline, current bands are CAD $400, $700 or $1,000 depending on the final-arrival delay. The cause, notice and other eligibility conditions must still be met.

How long do I have to claim from Air Canada?

A Canadian APPR delay or cancellation compensation request must be sent to the operating airline in writing within one year of the disruption. The airline then has 30 days to pay or explain why it refuses.

Where do I submit an Air Canada compensation claim?

Air Canada directs eligible delay, cancellation and overbooking requests to its Compensation Eligibility Tool. Baggage and other post-travel concerns can require a separate Customer Care process.
